King Taejo of Joseon/Chosun (태조​; b. 1335 - d. 1408; birth name: Yi Seung-Gae (이성계) later changed to Yi Dan (이단)) - the founding father or king of the Joseon/Chosun Dynasty, he was a military general who ultimately overthrew the Koryo Dynasty by a coup d'état. The Joseon/Chosun Dynasty, which was established in 1392, lasted until 1897. King Taejo of Joseon/Chosun is the grandfather of King Sejong the Great (see our subchapter on King Sejong).
