Also known as a Treaty of Peace, Amity, Commerce, and Navigation, this treaty officially established diplomatic relations between the United States and Korea's Joseon/Chosun Dynasty. The treaty's Article 1 declared that there "shall be perpetual peace and friendship" between the two countries, and that if "other powers deal unjustly or oppressively with either Government, the other will exert their good offices on being informed of the case to bring about an amicable arrangement . . . "​​ Unfortunately, despite the treaty being in effect, the Japanese protectorate over Korea was established in 1905, and Japan annexed Korea in 1910.
